What do you use to combat the famous Houston area mosquitoes?

My situation is we are unable to enjoy our swimming pool with out being attacked. I have tried off, but it only washes away in the pool. I have tried teaki torches and citronella candles, but have found that you have to stay right beside them or they are not very effective.

I was wondering if any one knew of some sort method, being spray or powder to spray or sprinkle in all the landscaping to deter them from my back yard? Or any other suggestions. Please keep in mind that I do have a small dog so this magical cure would need to be pet friendly.

I don’t know if this a problem shared around the houston area or if it is just in The Woodlands because of all the wooded areas.

1. plant marigolds everywhere, mosquitos hate them. you have to use the giant old fashioned marigolds, the newer varieties have no odor.

2. 1c lemon scented ammonia
1c lemon scented dish soap
use in your 20 gallon hose-end sprayer
spray the area 3 times a week in the early morning or late
late in the evening.

3. make sure you remove any standing water from your yard.
kids yard toys can collect alot.

i hope one of these is useful to you. good luck with the buggers.

    Sorry, couldn’t help it.

I’ve heard that adding garlic to your diet cuts down on the attraction.

The propane mosquito traps work pretty well but are pricey (several hundred bucks),and expensive to run, (about $20/month). They also make some electric traps that I hear work well too. If you are just sitting out on the porch, try putting a big oscillating fan near you, it helps a lot and is fairly inexpensive. You can always get a bug zapper, they don’t really do much for the big picture but are a bunch of fun when you sit out on the porch and listen to them. And of course there is always DEET.

I’m not familiar with the famous Houston mosquitoes but I have 2 suggestions for you. First is Marigolds….plant them everywhere, all around your house, backyar, patio, they are said to ward off mosquitoes and I have a few by my front door & haven’t had any mosquitoes around lately, so this is a good natural way to ward them off & I don’t think marigolds are harmful to dogs but u should check it out, I have a dog but he doesn’t bother my marigolds (except to maybe pee on them, lol). Secondly, OFF has a product called the Powerpad Lamp which is effective for a15X15 foot area (like a patio) it is supposed to ward off all insects, I’m sure u have seen the commercial where the lady is having a yard sale selling all her citronella candles & other insect repellent products but she is sitting next to the Powerpad lamp & when someone tries to take it she says "that is NOT for sale" because the area where she is sitting is mosquito free. Thise are my Top two choices for you, you can also look into a Bug spray that is Deet free to spary on before going outdoors but u would have to spray it on everytime before you go out & also look for a waterproof version if u will be going in the pool. Off also makes a good insect repellent called Smooth & Dry. But I really think the marigolds would be great, you could get them in stores like Walmart or Home Depot from $1.50-$3.50 for a decent size medium grown container or a 6 pack of partially grown ones & then transplant each one into bigger containers & arrange each container around your pool & also plant some directly in the ground, they come in orange & yellow (that I have seen) & there are many pretty variations to the regular old style marigold, so they are attractive & serve a good purpose, right now is the best time to buy them, they should be cheaper since most people have already planted their plants for the season, lastly you can buy a pack of marigold seeds for about $1 for about 50 seeds and plant them all over, but that way they will take longer to come up (I have some seeds in pots I planted in March that are still only an inch or two high but they still may be effective at warding off the mosquitoes) GOOD LUCK (P.S-look into lavender oils & other oils because I remember when my dog had fleas I used lavender oil on a handkerchief around his neck & it warded them off, I am sure there is an oil that will work for mosquitoes too and DON’T LEAVE ANY STAGNANT WATER IN YOUR YARD-STAGNANT WATER IS A MECCA FOR MOSQUITOES. Hope I was helpful

In Savannah Ga. the only thing you could use to fight mosquitoes and those pesky little "no seeums" was a mixture of Avon Skin so Soft and water. About 50/50. Everybody smelled good, like that pesky brother-in-law, keeps your skin nice and soft, and the little critters don’t eat you alive. Just put in in a sprayer and off you go. They’re breeding in your pool. They’re worse in the evening too. Keep your pool covered. If you can’t keep covering and uncovering your pool, I’ve heard that putting veggie oil in the water keeps the mosquitoes from laying eggs and thus no more skeeters.

I feel ya, Babe. In Lafayette,La, we’ve got the ones with the striped legs tht really hurt when they bite, and the itch is atrocious!

We all use the expensive repellant sold in garden centers-the propane kind. I’d prefer to use electric, but don’t know if they’re made!

    Worth every penny!
