One thing to remember, any kind of Texas Holdem odds can and usually do get very confusing. However, let me break pot odds down in very simple terms. Please note that we are only discussing Pot Odds. Not outs, implied odds, simple odds or anything else like that.

In short, pot odds are the odds you get when determining the ratio of the amount of money in the pot to the amount of money it will cost you to call the bet.

For example, let’s say you’re heads up with Player A. If there is $150.00 in the pot after the flop and Player A places a $20.00 bet it will cost you only 13% of the pot to stay in the hand. If your likelihood of winning is greater than 13% it’s a no-brainer to call because you’d have good pot odds.

That’s all there is to it really. Texas Holdem pot odds boils down to one thing. If your chance of winning is better than the ratio of the pot size to the bet then you have good pot odds. If it’s lower than you have bad pot odds.

One more thought about Texas Holdem pot odds. You’re still playing the player more so than anything else. Play the player more than your starting hands or the size of the chip stack and even, yes the pot odds.

If you can learn to read your opponents well you can utilize pot odds to help justify or solidify your decision. But Texas Holdem pot odds do not have to be an end all whenever you make a poker decision.

Knowing and understanding how texas Holdem pot odds work can be a useful and successful strategy. But again don’t make Texas Holdem pot odds your only strategy.

Small Business Startup: How A Beer Company Turned Problems Into Profits

If you’ve ever been to texas, you may have noticed a peculiar beverage for sale called St. Arnold’s Beer.

It comes in a distinct bottle, with a picture of St. Arnold himself (the patron saint of brewing) right on the label, and it happens to be the most successful micro brewery company in Houston.

At the time, Brock was working in the financial services industry making a good salary, but when his father unexpectedly passed away, it gave Brock a chance to reflect. He realized that time was limited, and that he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life at a job he didn’t love.

He sat down one day and made a list of what he loved. Near the top were two items: drinking beer, and making beer.

To the average person, these may have seemed like poor opportunities for a career change. After all, his entire background was in financial services. What was he going to do, go drive a delivery truck for Budweiser?

But Brock decided to just follow his heart, and set about getting financing to create Houston’s first micro-brewery.

From the beginning there were problems with his small business startup idea. Money was scarce for such a risky venture. Investors were reluctant to put their hard earned dollars into a business where the founder had no beverage industry experience. But after more than a year, Brock had secured barely enough to get started (one of his early investors was Kenneth Lay of Enron, which is an entire other story).

Several years into the project, Brock had secured a facility, constructed all the brewery equipment, and was ready to start making beer! But about a week before he was ready to launch, there was another major setback: a city inspector who had been testing the pipelines made a mistake with a pressure valve, and ended up destroying $100,000 worth of brewery equipment, in just 30 seconds!

What a blow, and just a week before they were set to launch. The next few years were spent in various courtrooms before being reimbursed by the city, but Brock was not deterred. He raised more money, rebuilt the facility, six months later finally shipped his first bottle of St. Arnold’s beer.

It should have been a time to celebrate, but initial sales of the product were disappointing. In fact, five years after shipping their first bottle of beer, St. Arnold’s had yet to turn a profit. How easy would it have been to pack things up and go home? Even the most die hard entrepreneur would have admit defeat after five years right? Maybe Houston wasn’t ready for it’s own micro-brewery.

It was at this time that Brock’s business partner decided to back out of the company. Brock bought out his shares (generously ensuring that he would at least recover his initial investment, even though the company was losing money) and they parted on good terms.

This was the lowest point for St. Arnold’s, and for Brock. With a struggling business, and very few customers, it was difficult to stay optimistic. But over the next five years, Brock was able to slowly but surely turn the company around. Today St. Arnold’s is not only profitable, but it is admired and loved as a houston tradition. People ask for the product if a particular bar or restaurant doesn’t carry it, and the brewery holds a tour every Saturday that is open to the public. Houston and St. Arnold’s have become synonymous, and it is all due to Brock’s refusal to accept defeat.

As entrepreneur’s we can learn a lot from Brock’s story, as we attempt our own small business startup.

First, never, ever, ever give up. I have yet to hear a single story of a successful small business startup that didn’t face setback after setback. It took Brock a year to raise enough money. Most people would have quit after a few months of failed meetings. The week before his launch all his equipment was destroyed in a freak accident (at a cost of $100,000). Most people would have given up then, after such bad luck. And finally, after five years of losing money, Brock continued to persist, after nearly everyone would have admitted defeat.

Second, I think it’s safe to say that the only reason Brock succeeded is that he loved what he was doing. If he had to face all those setbacks and he didn’t even like making beer, he surely wouldn’t have been successful. Loving your job and company is a prerequisite for success in any small business startup, because even if things look bleak, at least you are doing what you love.

The challenge for us all is to find our own St. Arnold’s Brewery…a business we love. And to spend as long as it takes to make it successful, no matter what setbacks we may encounter.

The number of eligible employees — not total employees — determines whether a business is considered a small employer under Texas insurance law. For example, if your business has 60 total employees, it could still qualify if six of the workers are part-time and four have coverage through some other source, such as a spouse’s plan.

If you decide to offer a group health plan to your employees, you must make it equally available to all of your eligible employees and their dependents.

Coverage is available under a small employer health benefit plan if at least 75 percent of a small employer’s eligible employees elect to be covered. Carriers must always “round up” when calculating the percentage. For example, a five-person business with only three employees wanting to participate satisfies a 75 percent requirement by rounding up.

However, in the case of a business with only two eligible employees, the law requires 100 percent participation. A husband and wife working in a business must be counted as two separate employees. Neither of the employees is eligible for coverage as a dependent of the other.

If you provide a health plan, state regulations and a federal law called COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act) allow employees to maintain benefits for a period of time after separation from the job. It is your legal responsibility to inform employees of their rights to continue coverage. Former employees who choose to continue their coverage through COBRA or state continuation must pay the full cost of the plan. You are not obligated to contribute toward their premiums, even if you previously paid a share. Ask your carrier for details about your responsibility toward former employees.

Types of Plans Offered

Health plans are classified as either “state-mandated plans” or “consumer choice plans.” A state-mandated plan provides certain required minimum features and coverages. A consumer choice plan is any plan developed by a carrier that excludes some state-mandated benefits. Generally, consumer choice plans that do not include all the state-mandated coverages will save you money on your monthly premium.

Although consumer choice plans are sometimes called “standard plans,” be careful not to interpret the term to mean that the coverages provided are “standardized.” Each carrier’s consumer choice plan may be different, and a carrier may offer several different consumer choice plans.

Some state-mandated benefits continue to be required for consumer choice plans, including coverages for:

* Phenylketonuria treatment, if prescription drugs are covered.
* Complications of pregnancy.
* Minimum hospital stay after childbirth (federally mandated).
* Reconstruction surgery following a mastectomy (federally mandated).

Consumer choice plans may vary depending on the type of carrier offering the plan. For example, HMO consumer choice plans must pay for 20 outpatient mental health visits per enrollee per year, but that’s not a requirement in indemnity plans. In addition, unlike insurance companies, HMO consumer choice plans must include basic health care services, such as inpatient, outpatient, and preventative services. Carriers may offer optional benefits that vary widely from plan to plan.

You don’t have the time for all this research and number crunching. But can you really afford to leave it on your “maybe someday” list? As the cost of medical care rises, the risks of not having health insurance are more apparent than ever. Today a single injury or illness –if uninsured– can leave a family in financial ruin. Moreover, health coverage is a key benefit of employment. You may not be able to hire and keep the best employees without offering it.

Another alternative to group health insurance plans, which can be unaffordable for many small businesses, is to offer individual health insurance options to your employees. By law, an employer is not allowed to contribute to these plans, or that would be treated as group insurance under Texas state law. But you can still help your employees become insured in a good plan and improve their health and well-being and also improve employee retention in the process.

The Texas Governor’s Mansion

The Texas Governor’s Mansion, which is located a block southwest of the Texas State Capitol Building in downtown Austin, is the most historic home in the Austin real estate market and the longest continuously inhabited executive residence west of the Mississippi River. Built in 1856, the Governor’s Mansion underwent construction after the Texas Legislature appropriated $14,500 in order for a suitable home to be built for the 5th governor of Texas, Elisha Pease, and his wife, Lucadia.

The mansion is a Texas historical landmark, and the Greek Revival style home was built by master architect and builder Abner Cook, who used buff colored bricks and lumber from Bastrop to build the home, adapting it to frontier life. The mansion, which has floor to ceiling windows and a deep veranda, is cooled in part by wide hallways which provide ventilation in the summer.
 
The home is basically square with four main rooms separated by a wide hallway down the middle, and there are servant’s quarters and a kitchen in the rear wing. The home has two stories encircled by 29 foot Ionic columns which span the building from top to bottom, with the downstairs floor being sixteen feet high and the upstairs floor being 13 feet high.

The home was completed on June 14th, 1856, and the home was six months overdue at the time, causing the builder to pay rent for the Pease family in a boardinghouse until its completion. At that time, the Legislature appropriated $2,500 for furnishings, and since the amount was not enough to fully furnish the home, the Pease family used their own furnishings, which was a habit that persisted for the next few first families, since the home was large and quite expensive to provide with ample furnishings.

The next governor, Sam Houston, felt the house was too sparsely furnished, and ordered a massive four poster mahogany bed, which is still situated in the southeast bedroom to this day. Temple Houston, Sam and Margaret Houston’s eighth child, was the first child born in the mansion, and at one point, their son, Andrew Jackson houston, locked members of the Legislature in their chambers and refused to give his father the key. The child was five years old when this occurred, and the child reported only relinquished the key when his father, Governor Sam Houston, threatened to have him arrested.

In 1901, the home was redecorated in the late Victorian style by First Lady Orline Sayers, who brought in plush, overstuffed parlor chairs and numerous potted plants to receive the home’s first presidential visitor, William McKinley, and his cabinet. Her husband, confederate veteran Joseph Sayers, met with President McKinley and his cabinet at an elegant state dinner in the dining room of the mansion.

By 1914, the home had fallen into disrepair, and was renovated by Governor Oscar Colquitt, and later, in 1960, the home was landscaped with formal gardens by First Lady Nellie Connally, and the formal gardens are still in use today. Later, in 1979, the home was completely restored by Governor William P. Clements and First Lady Rita Clements, after the Legislature appropriated $1,000,000 for the project, and at the time, the mansion had been in use for over 120 years.

Today, there are important art collections and heirloom furniture on display, including a collection of portraits and Stephen F. austin’s writing desk, and the public may tour the mansion with a tour guide provided by the state.
